1. How do I change the appearance or resolution of Windows 95?

Right-click the desktop and select "properties". You will see tabs to change the screen saver, appearance, number of colors, video driver, and so on. To test the appearance or wallpapers you select, click 'apply' instead of 'OK'.

2. Does Windows 95 need Dos? How do I run my Dos games?

Windows 95 is a stand-alone operating system and does not require DOS. However, elements of DOS have been built into Windows. Most of the commands previously located in the DOS directory are now located in the Windows\Command directory, and most DOS programs should work in Windows 95. If you have a problem getting a DOS program to work, try running it in MS-DOS mode as follows: Click Start - Shutdown - Restart in MS-DOS Mode. If you still have a problem, call the company from which you got the program.

3. I'd like to get on the Internet. What do I do?

There area basically two ways to get on the Internet: the large online services (Cable & Wireless, Compuserve, etc.) and the smaller independent Internet Service Providers (ISP's). The online services provide you with free software that integrates most of the capabilities of the Internet, and instructions for how to install and use the software. To get the software, call the service or look in any computer magazine. ISP's give you a connection, but generally assume you will use your own software. To connect to an ISP, go to Start - Programs - Accessories - Internet Tools and run the Internet Setup Wizard. Put in the information provided by the ISP. After you reboot, you should see a new icon on the desktop labeled "Internet". Double-click it to begin.

4. I'm getting General Protection Faults. What do I do?

GPF's are usually caused by software conflicts. If you started to get them after installing a new program, you might try uninstalling it. Corrupted video drivers are very frequently the source of the conflict. If you change your driver to VGA (see question 1), and the problem seems to clear up, you might need to install a new driver. Something else to try: Pressing Control-Alt-Delete will show you a list of all currently running programs, and the 'End Task' button will let you close whichever one is highlighted. If closing a program fixes the problem, that program may be the cause.

5. A program is loading when I first start my computer, and I don't want it to run. How do I keep it from loading?

There are several places in windows 95 that will load a program automatically: Start -Programs - Startup group
C:\autoexec.bat
C:\windows]win.ini on the lines that start with load= or run=
C:\windows]winstart.bat
The registry (be very careful what you do here)

If you need assistance with removing the program, call technical support.

6. How do I install a program?

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove Programs. Put your program's floppy disk or cd in the drive and click the 'Install' button. This procedure will work with most programs. If it does not work in your case, then the software vendor should provide you with installation instructions.

7. My system seems slower than it did before. What can I do?

First, go to Control Panel - System - Performance and see if any problems are listed there. If not, try the following steps:
Empty the recycle bin.
Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Run Scandisk and Defrag.
Press Control-Alt-Delete. If you have a lot of programs running, close some (you can close any but Explorer).
Check for viruses.
Check your resolution and color depth. The higher these settings, the slower you machine will be.
Installing a lot of fonts will also bog down your performance.

9. Why didn't Microsoft release Windows 96?

Actually, they did, and it's called OEM Service Release 2. It's not really a new version of Windows the way Windows 95 was. It's more of a collection of bug fixes and minor improvements to Windows 95.
